so yeah, hi, i'm new. alex, 18, english major at oglethorpe university.

i went into the hut yesterday about 11 pm, with some minor cramps and an upset stomach. it feels like my stomach has a hard time digesting anything when i'm on my period. does anyone else get this? what do you about it? normal treatments for upset stomach (pepto bismal, etc.) don't work for me.

Sometimes I also get kind of nauseaous when I'm in the hut too. (When I'm not devouring everything in sight!) And sometimes peppermint tea works wonders for upset stomachs and a digestive aid as well.

Yep. My colon goes into overdrive. Peppermint tea helps. Ginger also helps.

I looked in my aromatherapy book and they suggest putting a bit of essential oil (like pepperment or ginger) into massage or body oil and rubbing it on the "uncomfortable ares of your abdomen."

I have to echo plaidgirl's first two sentences. But she worded it a lot better than I was going to.

About the 2nd or 3rd day of my period, it peaks. I try not to ingest any caffeine normally (it always makes me shake when I stop taking it in, and sometimes when I am drinking it- and I don't drink that much. It's weird..). But I absolutely cannot have any when I'm in the hut or I turn into a shaking, hyper, moody bitch who has trouble sleeping. I also try not to eat sugar and limit my oil intake because they throw my digestive tract in loops.

I try drinking lots of tea- I have this one german chocolate Stash tea. It tastes so good I can drink it without soymilk or sugars, and it makes my cramps less painful. Peppermint sounds like a good idea, I'll have to look for some.

Avoiding caffeine might help.

I cut back on caffeine (in general, not just during my period) and have actually eliminated it entirely at times. Eat blander foods, and I found that cutting back a bit on fruits and veggies for the day or two preceeding and first day or two of my period helps.

Also ginger, crystalized or ginger tea can help. I also take two Tums twice a day (make sure I get enough calcium) which seems to help sometimes.

I echo the peppermint and ginger tea (if you can, find one with both in it, or mix two.) Also, avoiding dairy products (which can be very difficult to digest, especially for upset stomachs) until you feel back to normal can help a lot. Hope you're feeling better soon!
