hi, i'm new here. i'm on ortho-trcylen. i saw that recently someone had asked if it was okay to skip the sugar pills, and just go to a new pack. last week i did this, because i was taking a trip to visit my boyfriend, and i didn't want to be a raging hormonal case. here is where it gets complicated: while i was visiting him, we were fooling around, and i thought maybe he had broken my hymen. the next day i had some bleeding, and it has continued for seven days. i noticed when some people replied to that other post, they said that you can have some bleeding etc., even though you have skipped the sugar pills.

so, i'm trying to solve the mystery as to whether or not it is my hymen causing this bleeding, or if it's the fact that i skipped my sugar pills and went right to the new pack.

and if this has been caused by the pills, how much longer should i expect this to last? it has been seven days already, which is even longer than how long my period usually is (around five days). because if it isn't the pill..i'm guess i should probably see a doctor, and i need to find some way to tell my mother.

so, any advice would be really nice. thank you.

I usually skip my sugar pills. I was worried about doing it at first, but then I thought about it and it says they're "inactive" so I figured they didn't actually DO anything. I couldn't quite get a straight answer from my gyno, I think she misunderstood me and thought I was skipping real ones or something. But I really enjoy the week of respite from nightly pills especially since I'm dealing with my period part of that time, and I never forget to start them again, so I figure it doesn't hurt. But I don't go to a new pack (why would you do that?) I just take a week off. I assume you're still protected during that time somehow since you're not getting any hormones from the pills anyway? I don't know, maybe I'm missing something.

I think you're misunderstanding her. I think what she is doing is completely skipping the week off and going straight to the second pack. i.e., skipping her period - taking 3 weeks of actives followed by 3 weeks of actives with no time off.

Which works for most pills, although the tri-phasic ones like ortho-tri-cyclen don't work as well. Often you get break-through bleeding and it can be worse than just having your period. What you are doing when you dont take the week off is really messing with your body's natural system, even more so than taking the pills to begin with.

Whenever I try to skip placebos, i end up with my period anyway so I find it's just not worth it :o)

The kind of pills you are one affects if you are able to safely skip sugar pills. If you're on triphasal pills, which tri-cyclen are, you should not skip the sugar pills. The hormones in your pills gradually increase over the three weeks. When you move from the dark blue pills to the white pills, you're moving from a high dose of pills to a much lower dose. It's not good for your body. If you're on the triphasal pills, your body needs to menstruate. Moving from higher pills to lower pills without bleeding would also reduce the effectiveness.
Does this make sense?

Bleeding from a broken hymen shouldn't last more than a day or two, so it's more likely something to do with skipping the pills and going straight to a new pack. If you don't give your body the chance to get rid of all the womb lining it needs to shed at once, often it will just do it more gradually instead, so you often get lighter, more irregular bleeding.

You probably know this, but please remember that the pill doesn't protect against STDs - if you're sufficiently sexually active to be worrying about your hymen, you should probably be using a barrier method as well.
