Hey, I'm new to this community. Um possibly a silly question, but I heard that there's a way of using the pill to stop yourself getting your period when on holiday or whatever, is this actually possible? painfull? help.

You have to take an Oestrogen or combined type pill (not the progesterone only one). It will stop your period until you stop taking it.

Lemme explain . . . normally you would finish a pack and allow 7 days for your 'period' to take place. However, if you go straight on to the next pack without the 7 day break, you don't get a period. Your period will only occur when you stop taking the pill.

Better check with your doctor first though before doing this. Some contraceptive pills aren't the best for everyone. I can't take that particular kind of pill because it causes high blood pressure in me.

The Progesterone only Pill (POP), does not stop your period but is safer for people with Hypertension problems.

This has a bad habit of royally screwing up your internal clocks, and after doing it for enough time you can have some majorly nasty side effects, such as 3 periods a month, or no ovulation at all. It's not safe in the least, and really not recommended by anyone.

Okay, lemme clarify something before I get flamed left, right and centre, I'm not saying it is the CORRECT thing to do - just that it CAN be done for those feel the desperate need to do it. And before taking ANY oral contraceptive it should be discussed with your doctor FIRST, as they all mess with your body ^__^.

Oh, I know - just here to inform myself, no point in flaming people. :) Repeating stuff I was told when I started on the pill by my own doctor.

Ooops sorry I didn't mean for you to take that the wrong way!! *Eeeek* It's just that I realised how bad my information was without giving the warnings too!!!! .

I guess for some people it works . . . and for others . . . it's a big no-no!

But still . . . I should have stressed how important it was to be checked over medically first. *EEEk!*

And I'm glad you brought up the bad side of things too .

Gotta run . . . . . . . *running late*

Always good to get both sides of everything out, so people can make an informed choice. :) It's good that both sides of this got out in the open...

Have a good day :)

Just last weekend I watched a Discovery Health Show regarding "Your Period, Your Choice?" It was very interesting. They basically said that skipping your period by skipping the placebo pill is going to be a more common thing in the future. Some doctors just haven't heard alot about the subject. They even blamed having more periods could be the cause of many health issues including cancer. We have more periods now than our ancestors because they had more kids, and nursed longer. People who have intremitrosis (sp) commonly skip their period, to reduce the pain. I skip mine quite often and haven't had any side effects.
