[identity profile] ocean-fever-fae.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] menstrualhut
Hello all. I've been a member for a few weeks now but I didn't feel the need to post until I was in the hut and ta-da! She greeted me early this morning today, complete with achy stomach cramps. But I'm not complaining. I'm one of those people that actually looks forward to my time of the month simply because it just means something special to me.

Now that I'm past the introduction, I have a question that I was hoping some of you could answer. (I apologize in advance for the ickiness of the question)
Every month when I get my period I also sometimes experience diarrhea for a few days. Does that happen to anyone else here and if so, are there any foods you eat that can make it subside? I'm out of Pepto Bismol and pills for the time being, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks so much.

yeah, the same thing happens to me, making my intense craving for chocolate at the same time dangerous to satisfy. Immodium AD seems to help me, though.

good luck and welcome!

A few things to try: avoid caffiene (that means chocolate and soda, too), avoid dairy products if you can (avoid pizza, etc...dairy is very difficult to digest for most people, especially around their period when things are a little irritated down there anyways), and **increase fiber intake**. Seriously. My doctor told me these three things, and it really does work. Aim for about 15-20 grams of fiber a day. (You will probably notice right away that you are eating like NO fiber normally, which is dangerous for the digestion.) You can get fiber in crackers, Metimucil wafers (sorry about the spelling), high fiber pasta, high fiber rice, many kinds of fruits and veggies, and even in powdered form. Be sure to drink lots of water. Honestly, increasing fiber is the #1 way to fix digestive problems but for some reason no one does it (in favor of quick fix pills, which I know I relied on before I saw my doctor about this.) Give it a shot and see if it helps! I hope it does--I was in the same boat as you, so hopefully this advice (which helped me) will help you!

It happens to me too. I agree with the advice to increase fibre, but during an attack you probably want only the soluble kind of fibre. Good sources include most kinds of fibre supplements that you take mixed with water (not the ones you just sprinkle on food), bananas and oatmeal.
