i read in the instructions for my pill pac that you can skip the "empty" pills and skip your period. so i tried it 3 weeks ago today and i still got my period. only its lasted for 20 days. i started taking my empty pills today, as scheduled, so i know my period isn't going to stop at least for another week. i dont know if i should go see my doc now or wait until i start taking the real pills again next saturday to see if my period will stop. cos i know i screwed up my period by not taking the empty pills. i guess my question here is has this happened to anyone else who's taking/taken orthocyclen and skipped her empty pills? if anyone has any experience with this sort of thing, please help me out here.

I'm on Ortho-Tricyclen, if that's what you mean.
What are you talking about? The empty pills are nothing but sugar, the only thing they're there for is to keep in your head that you have to take your pills at a certain time, so you won't forget them when you start taking them again and you're off your period again. They aren't for anything but that. They won't stop your period if you don't take them......
Besides, trying to avoid your period with any pill is a very stupid move. When you're on the pill, your body still executes an egg and the tissue that isn't fertilized NEEDS to leave your body, that's what your period is for. Trying to stop that will indoubtedly screw your body up. Don't do it.
The only reason some girls don't get their period when they're on Depo Provera is because it stops the process completely, so there is no tissue to be disposed of.

I'm lactose intolerant, so I never took the "empty" pills because they were all lactose (milk sugar.) Skipping them doesn't hurt anything, as long as you remember to start your next pills on time, a week after the "sugar pill" week. It's a bad idea to try and skip a period by bypassing the period week and going directly to more hormone pills. Either take the sugar pills or wait a week, but skipping a period can have nasty affects long term. I'm not following you extactly on what is happening with you, but what I would do is just take the first week of pills on the first sunday (or saturday, depending on how your pack is arranged) of your period, on schedule. If things don't work out, call your doctor and ask if it is something to be worried about. You probably won't have to go in, but it never hurts to ask your doctor about it, that's what she is there for!

I'm also on ortho-cyclen and even if i skip placebos and go straight to a new pack I still get my period.
only I get a regular-length one. So I dont know whats up with the 20-day thing but I can't force my body to skip a period by skipping placebos :o(

So what the poster is talking about is not just not taking the placebos - but going straight from three weeks of active pills to the next pack's three weeks of active - without taking a week off on the placebos to allow her period to come.
And it's NOT harmful to your body, at least no studies have shown it to be harmful, to skip your period every other month or even for twice in a row while on the pill, in fact many women do this with quite a bit of success. It just doesn't work for me :o)

As [livejournal.com profile] resilientpewter said, there's no evidence that skipping your period once or twice at a time is harmful. There's speculation (but no more than that) that doing it more often than that may increase the risk of endometriosis and related disorders.

When you say you've had your period for 20 days, do you mean the full flow, or just spotting? Spotting is normal if you run two packs of active pills together, it's an effect of having more progesterone in your body than usual. A full flow lasting that long would not be normal, however, and would be worth seeing a doctor about. It may not be because of skipping the sugar pills - it could be a symptom of some other problem. You should probably keep taking your pills as normal until you can get an appointment.
