With most over the counter medications there is a standard dosage, and then there is the dosage that doctors sometimes prescribe. For Naproxin Sodium, the standard is typically up to two pills to start and then another, if needed 8 hours later, not to exceed 3 in 24 hours.

Has anyone else been prescribed a dosage for Naproxin Sodium for cramps, and if so, what was the prescription dosage?

I ask because I find that Naproxin is the best thing I’ve found for cramps, short of muscle relaxers, but the standard dosage doesn’t always take care of the cramps for the full 8 hours…today they started coming on strong again after 3. I just want to make sure that I don’t take an unsafe level of the medication if I go a little beyond what is directed on the package.

I went to http://www.rxlist.com and this is what I found for max dose of prescription naproxen sodium:

The max dose for the first day is a total of 1375mg, split into two or three doses.
The max dose after the first day is a total of 1100mg, split into two or three doses.

I've done a bit of research and from what I can tell an overdose of naproxen sodium causes stomach problems very similar to an overdose of ibuprofen.

I've had several doctors tell me to get OTC ibuprofen and take 3 or 4 at a time rather than prescribing me larger ibuprofen pills, so I assume it's pretty safe to take a bit more naproxen than the bottles max daily dose of 660mg. Also, I helps me to start taking pain killers 12-24 hours before I expect my cramps to start and keep taking a small dose regularly until I'm sure the cramps are gone.

YMMV

D'oh. I just realised that I repeated some of the same stuff that you said in your post...

I've found that Naproxin does nothing to my cramps. I can take double the reccomended dose (shh I know its bad =P) on otc ones, and it doesn't affect my cramps at all. I have found the only thing that helps me is midol.

sorrry for the lengthiness

i think on solving the cramps issue, its pretty much a "to each her own" sort of thing. i have gone through midol, ibuprofen, tylenol, pamprin, aleve (same as naproxin sodium), even arthritis medicine such as celebrex. i have found that celebrex works best, but not all the time. and if it doesn't work, you cant take anything else for another 24 hours, so that sucks. i usually take 3 advil every 5 hours or so, but i dont know if thats terribly good for your liver... it also can make you feel kind of pukey, especially if you eat things that are difficult to digest, such as beef, pork, and/or fish (too much protein for your liver to handle at one time). i also drink this herbal tea thats supposed to alleviate cramps. its by Traditional Medicinals and its a dandelion tea that tastes similar to black tea. 2 cups of that usually help. either that or raspberry leaf tea. oh, if you take the 3 advil and your stomach gets upset, you can drink ginger tea or peppermint tea to settle it. haha, have a menstrual tea party!
