I just finished my first pack of birth control pills, and I was kind of curious about something. Is it normal for your period to last the whole seven days? And its been really really heavy and very very bright red. I don't know if maybe its because I hadn't had my period before recently for a year and a half, and maybe my body needed to release all that built up lining.

Also, I can't use tampons anymore. Before when my period was normal, I used tampons all the time with no problem, even when my flow was really light, but now its hurts a lil to put it in, and when I take it out, it feels like I'm taking a bunch of knives out instead of a tampon.

Its very annoying because I hate pads. I miss tampons!! =(

When I was on the pill, it usually did last the full 7 days. You can generally make it stop by skipping back to the everyday pills, but I wouldn't recommend it. Let it shed fully, at least for the few month. And that is more than likely why you are bleeding so heavily -- the backed-up periods. Give it a few months to regulate itself before you worry about how heavy your flow is.

However, you should maybe call your doctor and ask about the pain with tampons. Have you tried a few different brands? It may even be an allergy thing. The body can develop allergies at any point, even to things you were always ok with before. Or if you're sexually active, there could be tiny tears in the vaginal wall that could account for it. Your doctor can probably answer this for you.

It's normal to bleed alot if you haven't had a period in a while regardless of if you are on the pill or not. Generally with the pill, you will notice your period to be shorter and lighter after about 3 months of use (with 4th week periods).
