I stopped taking the pill 4 days ago. Yesterday, my period began...very heavy. My normal period only ended 5 days before I stopped taking the pill. IS this normal? HELP!

Women who take birth control pills do not really have periods. There are 21 days of hormone pills and then 7 days of placebo (or you skip a week and start again, depending on what kind of pill you're taking). During that 7 days of no pills, or placebos, you have what you think is your period, but it's actually just withdrawl bleeding. Real periods only occur alongside ovulation, which doesn't happen when you're on the pill. They have you keep having periods so that you know if your birth control is working or not, and also, shedding the uterine lining is healthy because it prevents endometrial conditions inside the uterus such as hyperplasia.

So the answer is yes, if you stop your pills mid-cycle then you can cause yourself to have bleeding again so quickly. If you're going to quit the pill it's best to quit while you're on your placebo week if you are able to.

Of course, check with your doctor if the withdrawl bleeding doesn't go away on its own or you have any problems or worries. I am not a doctor.
