Well, my first attempt with a tampon didn't work....I took my gynecologist's advice and used my finger first to sortof feel the shape of my vagina, so that I would have a better idea of the angle at which to insert the tampon. That went fine...I was able to put my finger all the way inside. But then when I tried the tampon, it hurt and wouldn't slide in very well...I think the dry plastic against my skin caused too much friction, which caused pain...so, does anyone have any advice? I read somewhere that it's sometimes more comfortable to use a little lubricant (like K-Y) on the tampon applicator to make it slide in more smoothly. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? At this point I am ready to go out and buy some K-Y, but I'd like some opinions first...anyone have a similar experience and know of anything that might make inserting tampons easier? Thanks!

I have always used a lubricant. It works very well....

Find a position you're comfortable in too. At home I tend to stand with one foot on the edge of the tub...more comfortable than what I do in a public restroom (I kind of do the squat and hover thing) It may work better for you to be sitting too.

Keep trying. Good luck.

hmmm

when i first started using tampons, i needed some KY the first couple of times. make sure your period is flowing fairly well (from your last post it sounds like it is) because that will help the tampon slide in. you could try taking the tampon out of the applicator- it'll be smaller. it's a little messier that way, but you have a little more control over where it goes exactly.

using tampons will help some with the "old blood" prolem you wnetioned in your last post. for the first couple of months that you're using tampons though, you might want to wear panty-liners until; you get used to how long it takes to fill a tampon.

and good luck- when i first got my period i was swimming every week, so i got used to tampons real quick, but i still remember how scary they were at first, and it's been ten years!

Two things:

First of all, I think you're making the mistake I made my first time with a tampon: tensing up. You're going to have to learn how to relax your vaginal muscles. I don't know if you're sexually active or not, but if you plan on having a penis in there, you'll need to relax the same muscle. Practice letting your muscles go loose. If you've been practicing with a finger, you may want to try masturbating a little first to help you relax. If you can get a finger or two in there, you can certainly slide a tampon in. And yes, lubricant is *always* a good idea.

Also: remember to relax when you take the tampon out. Very important.

Good luck!

Expect the first few times to not go well - you just arn't used to it, you are stuffing something in there and it is weird.

You could try a little olive oil to see if lubricant helps (it may end up being more psycological than actual) and definately assume a squat position, or one leg on the bath - it angles the vagina backwards more.

Maybe a bit TMI (Too Much Information) but often you have to wiggle a bit to get it comfy - and I mean on the inside - Your vagina is not at 90 degrees to the vaginal opening - but also not every woman is exactly the same on the inside.

And if you think you are having a bad time pity the poor girl who ended up so desperate she asked for help only to be told she was trying to put it in the wrong hole.
