i don't know if this has been mentioned before, but a US man started a museum of menstration (MUM). you can check it out here.

you can go on a 'virtual tour' (filled with lots of neat info and photos of exhibits, etc.). there are also links there to art concerning menstruation and the norwegian museum of menstruation. i just spent a good hour milling around on the site -- it was fascinating!

on a side note, i stumbled upon the link by accident when i was researching comparisons between "The Keeper" and "INSTEAD" -- does anyone have any feedback they'd like to share on that? and let me know what you think of the museum (interesting that a man started it, no?).

yeah the museum is actually in maryland. my friend did a zine on menstruation for her thesis ( i did mine on riot grrrl), but she was in contact with the guy and everything. he closed the museum for a bit. i don't know if he's reopened it or not since.

i hear nothing but good things about the keeper.

i tried instead once. i hated it. it leaked, but then again, i was a heavy bleeder.

Keeper vs. Instead

I used Instead for a few months before I bought my Keeper, just to make sure I could deal with the menstrual cup scene before I invested the money. I had no problems with Instead at all. However, I see definite advantages in the Keeper:
  • It is not a disposable product, so I'm not producing waste every month what with the product itself, packaging, etc...
  • Over the life of the product (I think it's supposed to be 10 years) it is much cheaper than Instead
  • Instead seems to be becoming rarer and rarer in stores... maybe that's just in my area, though.
Just my 2¢, for what it's worth...

yup!

the homepage we link to from the hut is mum, and he made a mention of us in his news page last month.

As a side note... a man started the menstrualhut community, too. :)

Insteads

I've used Insteads now for about two years, and they are wonderful! It took me a few tries to get it right inserting them, but then, so did tampons!

What is The Keeper? and where does one buy them? I find Insteads hard to find in the New England area. CVS is about the only place I've found them.

I've heard nothing but good things about the Keeper. I'm planning to purchase one.

I tried Instead a few years ago. It's a fucking nightmare. Huge, unwiedly, uncomfortable. And it leaks if you cough, sneeze, or laugh. Run far, run fast.

The museum is cool- I've browsed through it a bit, but never had time or inclination to really dig.
