NOTE: This is just speculation. I am not saying that this is a viable BC method!

Has anyone heard of using megadoses of Vit. C as birthcontrol?

I have read numerous things about bc and that if someone is on a "low dose" pill and they take 1 mg of Vit. C or more it can turn the pill into a "high dose" pill...

I take a lot of Vit. C and I was wondering if it has bc-like properties.

Nope, no way.

Supposedly some ancients used half a lemon as a cervical cap, and the citrus changed the pH of the vagina. But taking vitamin C by mouth does not do anything like that. And if a low-dose BC pill is enough to keep you from ovulating, then "heightening" its effect would do nothing except maybe increase your side effects. But anyway, excess C is excreted in the urine; it really doesn't stick around to do anything at all.

I have read about using massive doses of it to induce abortion though...and about the serious safety risks involved.

I wouldn't recommend it.

I took a nutrition class way back in college, and they said that it doesn't do any good to take mega doses of vitamin C for anything, you pee out the excess anyway. No mention of any effect on B.C. pills, but there are certain B vitamins you should take more of because the Pill makes your body need them. And there are certain antibiotics and herbs (St. Johns Wort) that make the Pill less effective, so be careful!

I imagine if it did work that way, we'd all be at the supermarket buying lots of vitamins.

No, but I have heard of large quantities of Vitamin C being carcinogenic. It's probably best taken with more moderation. I'd suggest finding another method that works for you.

Vitamin C is a water soluable vitamin, which means that you can't overdose on it.

A quick internet search brought up this info from http://www.allwomens.org/services/bcpill.htm (http://www.allwomens.org/services/bcpill.htm):

"Vitamin C taken internally, 1000 mg or more, continuously or temporarily to prevent colds can increase the level of estrogen hormone in your blood and cause an increase in the side effects. If you are taking birth control pills, it is recommended that you do not take more than 1000 mg of vitamin C per day."

I didn't see any info about it actually being used *for* birth control.
