I want to thank everyone who entered the debate about the birthcontrol question I posted last night.

All of your answers were very engaging and awesome to read.
There are so many different POVs and a lot of similar ones, too.

I believe that while a male pill would be something viable, there is just as much risk with women lying about being on the pill as men who might lie about being on the Pill. Sometimes women lie about being on the pill to have a kid so that a guy will stay with her. Guys might lie about being on the pill to get a woman to sleep with him, who knows?

As women, we do carry the ramifications of "getting" pregnant. We make a decision to keep the fertilized egg or not. We carry the result for 9 months and choose to give the baby up for adoption or take care of the child the best we can for the rest of our lives. I believe that it is partly our responsibility and partly the responsibility of the partner we chose to engage in intercourse with.

Again, I want to thank everyone for debating!

:)

The debate was fun, yes. But at this point, a male birth control pill just ISN'T viable. Scientists have tried to create one, and it just doesn't work, at least for now. It leads to long-term low sperm production or even sterility, and and the change in hormone levels affects secondary sex charateristics in males in ways that the pill does not affect females. It is simply easier to turn off ovulation in females than to halt sperm production in males.

One other thing: While the internal, chemical birth control methods are only currently for females, the most common, most easily available to everyone, and sure as hell cheaper than my $35 every three weeks for pills, BC method is condoms. Which are made for men.

I pay more for a package of 6 condoms than I do for my birth control pills. A six pack of Avanti condoms, if I buy them in CVS runs around 12 or 13 dollars. Two months of birth control pills when purchased through my health insurance is $10. I'm the execption and not the rule there though.

Yeah, Avantis are ridiculously expensive. Regular latex condoms are much less. My health insurance doesn't cover birth control, and I haven't been able to get to Planned Parenthood, so my pills are $35 every three weeks. It would take a LOT of nookie to go through that much in condoms.

and this confirms my belief that the american healthcare system is..... odd.

In the UK Birth control, if obtained by the female at least, is free - I took the pill for 17 years and paid not a penny. A friend asked for condoms as her BC method & were again provided free.

Personally I also think that basic menstural products should be equally gratis - but maybe that is taking the NHS for a ride? At least they are zero tax, like food.

Condoms were originally created to prevent STDs, not primarily as BC - hence max benifit to the male (sorry, cynical today).
