just out of curiousity... why does anyone use birth control pills when it would appear that the birth control shot is so much more convenient?

does the shot have worse side affects that i haven't heard of? sorry if this question seems naive; i'm more than a little ignorant on the subject.

For me, and for a lot of other people, the injection (Depo Provera) has the worst side effects in the world. For some people it works like a charm, but for others it's a nightmare. I can't comment on Lunelle, the other injection, as it's not available in the UK and I know nothing about it.

for me, convenience doesn't matter at all when it comes to fucking up your body. if something is convenient but much worse for your body, like the depo shot is, there's no way it's worth it. i won't take birth control because i don't want all those hormones and chemicals controlling my body, but if i was going to take it, it'd definitely be the pill. the shot sucks because you get three months worth all at one time. the first week my friend got the shot, she got huge craters of acne, gained 10 pounds, had horrible emotional mood swings, etc, and she couldn't do a damn thing about it because the shot lasted for 3 more months. it sucks.

(a) i don't want to give my body three months of hormones all at once
(b) i'm progesterone-intolerant. I can't even take progesterone-heavy birth control pills
(c) while many of my friends love the shot, many of them also have horrible side effects. I have enough health problems, I don't need to add more.

Of course, I don't actually take the pill anymore. But those are my reasons for choosing the pill over depo. As for Lunelle, I'd have to pay for the prescription *and* an office visit every month, so it would be cheaper to pay for the pill, which only requires one office visit a year.

The shot has more, and stronger, side effects than any modern pill. With the pill, if your body doesn't take to it well, you can stop taking it. You're stuck with the shot for three months no matter how badly it works. I've been on Ortho Tri for four years, and love it. No matter the convienience, I will never take the shot.

doc told me "if your choice is the shot, I couldnt begin to tell you whats going to happen to your period." she mentioned about how insanely your periods would be. "It could take about a year to get back on track" and sometimes have periods for months straight? Nuh uh. No way would I accept that shot!!

Has anyone heard of the new birth control, Nuvaring? Its neat. It*s just a ring that stays in for 3 weeks, out for one, and then repeat. Special?

My friend's been on it for a month. She hasn't said anything about it so it must be working okay for her.

yea, could be!! What bites is how you have to put the ring in the sunday after you start your period. So, if you start on a sunday, you put it in the same day. No fun. But its all good.

While I've never used the shot, I've heard of lots of people that have gained a LOT of weight (30+ pounds) or when they went off of it had their period for 3 months straight....
THAT is why most women like to use the pill :) It's really not a hassle at all, and I gained a few pounds, but that was the only side-effect.

1. I'm already on the bigger side (not huge, but not exactly bikini-worthy), so possible weight gain doesn't float my boat.
2. Needles are one of my Worst Fears. I need a really good reason and no alternative to let someone stick one in me. My mother once remarked after a doctor's visit that at least she never had to worry about me being a heroin junkie. ><

Ortho Tricyclen is my friend.

The Depo Shot is quite evil. I was on it for a year. The first couple months were alright. It was after that it went straight downhill.
I notice that quite a few people mentioned that there was bleeding for months straight. I didn't have that problem. I had major clotting problems. I didn't have much of a period at all except for stringy blood discharge (I was told that it would go away, it never really did). Cramps worse that anything I ever imagined. Hair loss. Weight gain (30 lbs) and stretch marks. Breast tenderness (putting on a bra was painful at times, as was direct shower spray). Mood swings. Blah the list goes on.

In conclusion I wouldn't ever reccomend it. My story was quite mild in comparison to my roommates. :/
