So, my period started unexpectedly and it's been going on for days and is still quite heavy. I wanted to use softcups again, but I guess they don't sell them at Smith's anymore (wah!), so I'm back to the old pads and tampons. Well, anyway, I ordered a Diva Cup online. I know it won't be shipped over in time for this period, but I've been dying to try it for a while. I told my mother about it, and she asked how you sterilize it. I said that on the website, it said you could boil it in a pot of water. She said, "I hope you throw the pot out afterwards!" I'm a poor college student, and I'm not about to throw out a pot, since those are pricey. I figure that just washing it should be fine. If I had AIDS or some other disease, it would be different, but I don't have any such diseases, and I have such a fear of AIDS anyway I try my hardest not to contract it. Now I just have to figure out how to boil it privately, since I have roommates.

Technically, since the boiling water will sterilize the cup, it will also sterilize the pot in the process.

Instead cups, I think, or at least I've seen them using that name.

Blarg. Your mother is silly, I'm afraid. I can't boil my keeper and it has never given me a problem, cleanliness-wise. I'd just boil in the middle of the night.

You could make DivaCup tea?

Put water in a mug and heat it in the microwave until it boils then just drop your DC in. Very discrete, mug and DC sterilized, and if you're squeamish you can just use a certain mug that is used for nothing else.

OH! But be sure that the water is boiling when you drop in the DC or else it won't kill all the germs.

I was gonna say that I think it's perfectly fine to boil it in a pot and not throw out the pot afterwards (that's what I do...~waits for people to be grossed out~), but I just remembered...the divacup instructions say you can boil it OR clean it with rubbing alcohol!

That might be the best solution for you since you don't need a pot and wiping the thing down with alcohol can be done in the privacy of your own room :)
